Extracorporeal shockwave therapy is a procedure that passes acoustic shock waves through the skin, via a hand held tool, which is applied by the physiotherapist. The shockwaves are mechanical, not electrical; they are audible, high frequency soundwaves which work by increasing the blood flow to the injured area, this accelerates the body’s healing process. Extracorporeal means outside the body, therefore it is a non-invasive, effective method for the treatment of localised musculoskeletal pathologies. Shockwave therapy can be used for both chronic and acute soft tissue disorders. The treatment produces an inflammatory response, the body responds by increasing metabolic activity around the area of pain, this in turn stimulates & accelerates the healing processes, promoting neovascularization, collagen production and remodelling of dysfunctional collagenous tissues. Shockwaves can also break down scar tissue & calcification within the damaged structures.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the treatment hurt?

There may be some discomfort during treatment, depending upon the level of pain that the patient is already experiencing in the area. However, since the treatments only last for about five minutes, most patients are able to tolerate this discomfort quite well. Additionally, the intensity of the treatment can be adjusted at the beginning of each session to allow some analgesic effects.

Most patients will experience an immediate relief of pain following treatment. However, within 2-4 hours after treatment, they may experience some soreness in the treated area. This soreness has been reported as being very tolerable and it may last from a few hours to several days.

It is recommended that patients continue with their normal activities of daily living and sporting activities. However, they should refrain from excessive physical activity for 48 hours.

Avoidance of direct heat or cold, and anti- inflammatory medications for 48 hours will also be advised by the physiotherapist.

Each treatment session takes approximately 5-10 minutes. Most conditions require three to five sessions. The treatments are done 5-10 days apart, depending upon your specific requirements.

The reported rate of clinical success is between 77 and 80 percent worldwide. Each treatment is cumulative and results are often felt after three or four sessions. You may even feel an improvement in your condition (usually a reduction of pain) after the very first treatment. Although short term effects are excellent, the long term benefits of treatment may continue to improve for 3-4 months after treatment is completed.
